In this hilarious and deadpan black comedy, Madeline (Lyra Hill) and Naomi (Bruce Bundy) star as narcissistic young Chicago restaurateurs. Determined to help their community—or was that to boost their ailing business while getting a tax break?—they enlist a waiter and an unpaid intern to help them throw an elaborate charity fundraiser at their chic restaurant, Ciao. But even the best laid plans and party games can go awry, leading to a comical, nightmare-ish chain of jealousies and mishaps... and then yet another fundraiser, and then another...

Sous couvert de critique sociale, Neighborhood Food Drive est un film surréaliste, influencé autant par l'univers absurde et provocateur de Buñuel que par les satires américaines caustiques de Frank Perry et Todd Solondz. Les personnages sont horribles et, même si leurs agissements semblent incroyables, leur délire maniaque, leur égoïsme, et leur rhétorique froide et étrange sont hyperréalistes et authentiquement américains. Cependant, en revoyant ce film dans le contexte sociopolitique apocalyptique de 2020, je trouve finalement ces monstres subtils assez sympathiques.
Neighborhood Food Drive is a surrealist film disguised as a social critique film, influenced as much by Buñuel's absurd provocations as by the caustic American satires of Frank Perry and Todd Solondz. The characters are horrible and, although their actions often defy belief, their manic delusion, selfishness, and reliance on cold, alien rhetoric feels hyper-realistic and distinctly American. However, rewatching this in the apocalyptic sociopolitical landscape 2020, I actually find the film's subtle monsters quite likeable.

Le réalisateur Jerzy Rose, également co-auteur de l'impeccable et mordant scénario, dirige le film avec une assurance discrète, et parvient à tirer de ses interprètes des performances comiques aussi originales qu'inspirées. Avec son esthétique artisanale et son ton rocambolesque, Neighborhood Food Drive montre que son réalisateur a su utiliser au mieux un budget limité, nous offrant une satire fine et absurde de la bourgeoisie que Buñuel lui-même n'aurait pas reniée.
Director Jerzy Rose, who also co-wrote the biting, pitch-perfect script, leads the production with understated assurance, eliciting inspired, original comedic performances from his cast. With an understated homespun aesthetic and a natural flair for the dramatic, Neighborhood Food Drive makes the most of its limited budget to offer a smart, absurdist skewering of the bourgeois that even Luis Buñuel would have enjoyed.
